BROMINE

Bromine tablets are wrongly named because they contain both bromine and chlorine. These chemicals are bound together using another chemical. It is wise to note that the binding agent can be a skin irritant at high levels. This is why a spa should be diluted regularly when using “bromine tablets”.

Bromine works in the same way as chlorine, a minor difference being it is slightly more stable at higher temperatures than chlorine alone (i.e. in spas and hot tubs), this is why it is sometimes favoured as a sanitiser in spas.Chlorine however is still a perfectly capable sanitiser for use in spas.

We test for bromine in a similar way to chlorine, however, we use a bromine test kit/strips (*) or if you have a chlorine test comparator with DPD TABLETS YOU CAN MULTIPLY BY 2.25 TO PRODUCE A RESULT. Bromine in spas should be 4 – 6. Ph is common to both chlorine and bromine dosing as are the water balance parameters.
